This October marked the 100th Homecoming Celebration at Howard University, honoring a century of culture and tradition. The week-long festivities on the “Yard” brought together students, alumni and the community to celebrate the HBCU’s history and impact. Among those returning to their alma mater for the event was Damola Idowu, co-founder of Toyz Electronics and proud Bison.
“As an HBCU, Howard represents the celebration of Black excellence and preservation of culture, bringing together innovation, tradition and inspiration. Howard is called the Mecca for a reason,” Damola shared. “Being part of such a profound legacy equipped me with the technical expertise to succeed and the confidence to overcome the barriers often placed before minorities. We have to be excellent at all times and do so with integrity.”
As a student at Howard, Damola was immersed in a setting that celebrated academics and cultural pride. The university’s emphasis on leadership and service resonated with him, inspiring his commitment to providing the next generation with opportunities. By being surrounded by people who inspired him and came from similar backgrounds, Damola gained a unique perspective of his identity which gave him a sense of belonging that he had not experienced prior. Returning to Howard during this milestone homecoming is a powerful reminder of the university’s lasting impact on Damola’s life and career.
Through Toyz Electronics, Damola honors the legacy of his alma mater by empowering students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue their passions. Damolas journey is a testament to the power of an HBCU education and the importance of cultural pride.
